Adam's "URGE" Buck in Oklahoma
Adam posing with his trophy buck...and his URGE!
As I straddled a limb to hang one of our tree stands, I heard a crashing of leaves. As I looked up, I noticed a doe stopped 15 yards from the stand. This is the rut so who do you think is behind her? That's right, a 140s stud!! I didn't get a clean shot at the buck so I backed away and hung the stand in record time.
The rest of the night was slow until the Big 9 point made the curtain call. With light fading fast, he walks straight to the spot where I had sprayed some Code Blue Urge and, as if orchestrated, he turns broadside. I get him to throw his head up and let the bolt fly! SMACK! The bolt hits him directly in the shoulder. Apparently, the limbs of the crossbow were tangled in some limbs I failed to cut as I tried to leave as much cover as possible. I think the hit is good but the footage is not looking very promising. There was no penetration and the bolt's path was diverted as the broadhead hit bone. We looked for the buck for three days using every technique possible. At this point I am sick. I start doubting myself and saying what if or what could I have done? That is why we call it hunting, many variables and sometimes extremely small margins of error. HEARTBREAK!
I climbed back in the first buck stand and waited for the fog to lift on the last morning of our hunt. We had a few does come in so I start to hand Mike the crossbow so he can share in the action and management. The crossbow barely made it over the camera-arm before I change my mind, because out steps "King Krab"– a massive 8-point with a turkey foot kicker on his right G2. He gives me a perfect broadside shot, the same exact shot I had with the first buck and this time, there's no doubt that the broadhead found its mark! YES, SIR! REDEMPTION!
Thanks,
Adam N.
